We'd skip this option. How a Video Doorbell WorksWhen you push the button on a traditional doorbell, the action closes a circuit to ring a chime inside your home. Video doorbells are a bit more complex. When you push the button on one of these devices, the doorbell's camera sends a video feed to your smartphone over Bluetooth or Wi Fi, and you can press a button in the app to talk to the person at the door over a two way speaker. Each doorbell supports ring alerts, which notify your phone when a person rings the bell, as well as motion alerts, which can be a little more hit or miss. How We Test and Rate Video DoorbellsWe self installed the video doorbells on houses in Massachusetts and California, and tested in real world conditions with friends and family ringing the bells day and night. We evaluated ease of setup, the design and features of the app, how well the app and doorbell kept us notified, and video and audio quality. We also factored in how much you'll pay for cloud storage to save the video.

An image sensor array 1114 may be disposed on top of an end of the sensor board 1108, and the lens assembly 704 may be further disposed on top of the image sensor array 1114, such that light passing through the lens assembly 704 arrives at the image sensor array 1114 to form an image captured by the image sensor array 1114. In some implementations, the sensor board 1108 includes an image processor. The image processor of the sensor board 1108 is optionally located directly below the image sensor array 1114 to facilitate further processing of the image captured by the image sensor array 1114. In some implementations, the sensor board 1108 also includes a connector for communicatively coupling the sensor board 1108 to the image sensor array 1114. In some implementations, the image sensor array 1114 and/or the image processor of the sensor board 1108 is thermally coupled to a heat spreader 1138 that is disposed under the image sensor array 1114 and configured for dissipating heat generated while images are being captured and processed. The sensor board 1108 may include one or more of a power supply connector 11082, an AC DC converter 11084, a voltage regulator 11086 and a power unit 11088.

We mounted and hardwired each of the detectors to the apparatus and noted how long it took to install each one using the included manufacturer instructions. After connecting each alarm to a Wi Fi network, we installed its associated mobile app on a smartphone. We evaluated how easy each app is to use and tested how long it takes for notifications to arrive on your mobile device when there is an emergency. We also assessed how well each device connects to third party smart home automation systems. We contacted each company, when possible, to assess how helpful its representatives are when resolving potential technical problems. Detection EfficiencyOur detection efficiency testing is for comparison purposes only and was not designed to replace industry standard safety certifications carried by each unit we reviewed. Perhaps the most important thing we learned from our testing is that smoke detectors have a limited range, which is one of the reasons modern building codes require a unit in every bedroom as well as in areas adjacent to bedrooms. To test effectiveness, we sprayed test smoke from an aerosol can directly at each device and timed how long it took the alarm to sound. We sprayed the test smoke from 5, 10 and 15 feet away. Every detector sounded within 30 seconds at the 5 foot mark. Three smart smoke alarms –Nest Protect, Halo+ and First Alert Onelink – went off at the 10 foot mark.
